Self Esteem

Preview

Some people with disabilities have a low self esteem of themselves, especially the people that have been in some kind of accident. All of their life they were an athlete in high school, a straight A student, some one on the cheerleading squad, and an unexpected accident happened, and they lost a limb or became confined to a wheelchair. Then they come to realize that they cannot do what they use to do, and become very depressed. Some people may become very isolated, and not want to socialize with society any longer.

I remember when I was released from rehab I had to wear this brace on my left leg that was made out of plastic, and it was hideous! I was very ashamed of it, and did not want anyone seeing it because then that would start the questions.

In the Georgia heat I would always wear pants or sweat pants just to cover the brace up. I did not care if was 100 degrees I would have long pants on! As I grew older, I got tired of wearing long pants during the summer and finally put some shorts on! That was my self-esteem. I was afraid of what people would say about me, and the questions they would ask. At that time the accident was still new to me, and when people would ask questions it made me get really upset.

You need to realize that the injury makes you very different in a good way. Learn to advocate for yourself, and always be open to opportunities. You were put on this earth for a reason!
